The blogger that inspired me to try this year-long project posted yesterday that anyone who began on January 1st had hit the 100 day mark. 100 days. Has that much of the year really gone by? And I seriously can not believe I have been able to work on something creative, even if it is just a little something or a few stitches, every day for 100 days.

During these past months, I have started  patterns and projects that had been printed out and sitting in a folder for months or even years.  I’ve been able to have less half-finished projects in various states because having to find something to work on each day actually caused me to finish things. I’ve tried new techniques(with varying results) and pulled things that were outside of my comfort zone right into it.

Today I just worked on some more cat squares, it was a day like any other day. But it turns out was also the 100th day. I am usually pretty self-deprecating, pointing out the flaws in my work whenever anyone compliments me, but today I am going to say that I am proud of me. Not for what I have done, but for having done it.

Aside from this blog and multiple to-do lists, I have gotten out of the habit of writing. When I was younger, starting in my teens, I kept a journal.  I didn’t write every day, but I did write regularly. It was unstructured writing and was a good way to work through thoughts. When I was working,  i had to write regularly.  More structured writing like web copy, project plans,  or even a performance review, but it kept me writing something. Since I have been out of work it does seem that only to-do lists get written.

I decided to participate in that WordPress Blog U program taking place in April. I must admit, I started it a few days late only opening the instructions for Day 1 only after I had gotten the Day 3 email. Whoops.  The first day called for 20 minutes of free writing.  And so I did it.  And it felt good. Not structured, but thoughts that moved from one topic to another. I’m not following the instructions to publish it out, but keeping it in a document on my own computer.

When I started the idea to try to work on something creative every day for a year, I was thinking of items to make, working with my hands. Fortunately, “work on something creative” is vague enough that I am going to count this writing exercise for today. Perhaps my hands needed a break, or my mind needed the exercise.

I almost typed “1985” into the date above. Somehow I have regressed 30 years.

Today I am trying to clean and organize, but really I am just moving things from one miscellaneous pile into another pile of like things. I am calling it step 1.

I did stop to make this little decoration. This will go into the boxes of Christmas decorations as they come down, to be there when unpack them again for next Christmas.
