America is basically a two-party system politically. This week, one of the parties, the Democrats, held their convention to nominate their presidential candidate. It was in my city, and we decided to take a subway ride down to check out the different protests taking place.
I treated this sociologically rather than politically. We talked to protesters, police and attendees of the convention. We stopped at a rally for the “Black Lives Matter” movement and one supporting Bernie Sanders. Both groups were large, passionate, organized and, for the most part, orderly. It was a hot day and there was free ice water being passed out through the crowds even offered to the police who were stationed around the area.
You could feel the energy generated by the community of so many people coming together uniting their voices. One person yelling looks a bit crazy, but when thousands gather, the chants have power.

Power to the People. Very good interpretation.
I’m a hippie at heart.

Wonderful images and story. The strength of the people in democracies when they are not gunned down or imprisoned or disappeared is wonderful to behold. In Australia we had a federal election a month ago and the people are standing up to the two powerful political parties and choosing a third option called stalemate and negotiate.
I talked to a police officer who had been putting in 12 hours days all week in 95f/35c weather. He commented that he enjoyed doing this because it reminded him there are many places where demonstrations like this would mean death to the protesters or their families, but not here.
Great representation of Strength. Love the Bernie Sanders quote….I remember the demonstrations, peaceful and otherwise, from the 60s! This has been an interesting election cycle, hasn’t it. Full of passion and dare I say, craziness.
So much crazy! I’m starting to think only a crazy person would want the job of president.
Haha! I agree, and I’m convinced someone who is running truly is crazy. 🙂
