While I was embroidering I noticed something. I was stitching with my right hand. I am left handed, but throughout life have found myself occasionally doing things with the other one. I have always cut right handed, but I attribute that to the lack of left-handed scissors available in school. I write and crochet left handed, but use the mouse right handed, and now, apparently, I also do hand stitching that way.
I noticed in the fall when I was painting our porch that I switched back and forth depending on what side of the ladder I needed to reach. Does everyone perform tasks with different hands? Is it a left-handed issue from living in a right-handed world? Or is it just me?
Just a glimpse into what runs through my mind when I am working on a project.
I started left-handed but the teachers in school “changed” me to write right-handed.I switch back and forth now depending on what I am doing.
I have an aunt who had her left arm tied to her chair in order to change her to right handed.
That’s really mean. My teacher just told me often to hold my pencil in my right hand.
Can you imagine a school trying that now? It is mean.
I also was originally left handed but my father told me left handed people were aliens. Turns out he was saying alienated but I was too young to understand completely. All I knew is I didn’t want to be an alien. For the longest time I was confused and would do everything with both hands, I wouldn’t eat unless I had a fork in both hands and colouring too. I found even to this day some things I do with my left and other I do with my right.
Isn’t it funny how much a small misunderstanding as a kid can have such an effect on your life? Glad you are not an alien!
It’s amazing yes, I look back now and laugh but man was I scared of being alien, glad I’m not too.
I always called myself “ambidextrous.” I write and eat left handed, but I do most sporting events right handed (throw balls, pole vault, throw a frisbee, etc…). I also embroider stuff with either my write or left hand depending on the stitch (back stitch -right hand, chain/twisted chain -left hand), ha ha ha. I find that my left hand I use for precise movements and my right for powerful movements. It’s so interesting that another “lefty” has a similar experience.
I think I might throw throw right handed too. That is interesting you change hands depending on the stitch. I’m going to pay more attention to see if I have “types” of things I do with one hand or the other.
You are just ambidextrous! A happy state. I am very right handed, left hand side noticeably less used for anything!
A confusing state sometimes, or maybe that’s just me.
I’m definitely a righty but so many of my family members are lefties. My Son actually uses both hands
We have a lot of lefties in our family too. It makes getting everyone a comfortable place at the table interesting as all the lefties are charging for the corner spots.
Wow–that’s actually very cool! I could no sooner stitch or write or do anything, really, with my left hand!
I am sure it comes from adapting to a right-handed world, it’s just funny that things like a needle which can be used either way end up in my right hand.
