I am lucky to live close to Lancaster, PA–probably best known for its large Amish community. One of the things I like best is all the traditional folk art that they still produce. Hex signs or barn stars are one of the symbols that have come to be associated with the Amish and they are full of symbols. One of them is the distelfink.
The distelfink is a stylized version of a goldfinch and is supposed to bring good luck. I was fooling around trying to capture the hex sign-style of it freehand. It starts with 2 circles, which are really hard to get right when you are just winging it. If I were going to do this seriously, I would invest in a compass, or at least trace around something circular.
